Yesterday the LA Weekly featured a story on the 90’s Los Angeles hot spot The Monkey Room where Gordon Naccarato was Executive Chef.
Gordon says ” Gordon says “was a crazy time! Every night insanity”
The food wasn’t shoddy either, boasting a fusion menu from the “global table” that Reichl mused was the “90s on a plate.” Head Chef Gordon Naccarato had cut his teeth at Michael’s in Santa Monica, before opening the celebrity mecca Gordon’s in Aspen with Bruce Paltrow and Blythe Danner. “Naccarato cooks as someone who loves ethnic food,” food writer Laurie Ochoa wrote. “If we’re lucky, this is the direction high-end ethnic cooking is going- food inspired not by cookbooks, but by direct experience.” She particularly liked Monkey Bar’s Puerto Nuevo-style lobster tacos, while Jonathan Gold loved the chili noodles.
Monkey Bar’s food even had the approval of Julia Phillips, producing powerhouse and author of the scandalous 1991 Hollywood expose “You’ll Never Eat Lunch in This Town Again.” “The roast chicken stuffed with mushrooms and dressing and garlic mashed potatoes from Monkey Bar” was her favorite meal in L.A., she told the Los Angeles Times. “That place is such an absolute scene right now, if someone had it sent to my home I’d be happy. And except for the mashed potatoes it is really low-cal.”
What Monkey Bar really served up was sleazy-chic star-power. It was particularly popular with beefy male hotties from the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s on the prowl. Nicholson was, of course, a constant presence. Don Henley, Mickey Rourke and Kiefer Sutherland were all regulars. Shannon Doherty made it one of her party stops, while more refined stars like Glenn Close and Nick Nolte dined with James Brooks in a secluded booth. There were many industry soirees: at a Grammy party for the Atlantic Group, Nicholson partied with David Crosby, Mr. Big (no, not that Mr. Big) and First Brother Roger Clinton. When Nicholson received the Life Achievement Award from AFI, he unsurprisingly held the after-party at Monkey Bar.
From its opening, Monkey Bar was also the favorite hang-out of Heidi Fleiss, ‘90s “madam-to-the-stars” and current macaw breeder.

Tacoma, Washington, 07/29/2015— Pacific Grill, LLC, part of the Naccarato Restaurant Group, is pleased to announce the hiring of Franco D’Amico as the new General Manager.
Franco is well known around the West Coast restaurant scene, working at restaurants in Portland, Oregon, including: Raven & Rose, First National Taphouse, The Sidebar and El Gaucho (GM/Managing Partner). In Seattle, Washington, Franco was the Executive Dining Room Manager at Teatro ZinZanni and in California he was General Manager at Morton’s The Steakhouse.
Franco also has extensive hotel operations experience in a number of roles, including Food & Beverage Management at Hyatt Hotel/Resort.
Chef/Owner Gordon Naccarato, a winner of Food & Wine Magazine’s Best New Chef award said, “Coming off of our most successful year ever, and as we celebrate our 10th anniversary– I look forward to working with Franco as he brings his wealth of experience to Pacific Grill and takes us to the next level.”
Franco is excited to join Tacoma’s most award-winning restaurant and build a relationship with the staff and customers.
Pacific Grill (1502 Pacific Ave. Tacoma, WA 98402) is a restaurant located in the Historic Waddell Building (1889) in downtown Tacoma, Washington. Pacific Grill is owned and operated by Gordon Naccarato and Joseph Hardwick Jr.. The parent company also operates Pacific Grill Events & Catering and Classics Cafe (located at LeMay-America’s Car Museum), all located in Tacoma. In 2015 Pacific Grill will celebrate their 10th year in business serving Tacoma and the South Puget Sound region.
We are excited to announce that Pacific Grill was named the BEST RESTAURANT in Tacoma the Weekly Volcano 2015 Best of Tacoma Reader’s Poll !!!
Pacific Grill is one of Tacoma’s stand-out culinary gems – a hub that combines a revamped urban space, the arts, romantic atmosphere and (most importantly) delicious food. Diners at the Pacific Grill, which is located in the historic Waddell Building, are surrounded by exposed brick and just the right amount of industrial chic, as well as silk-and-resin seaform artwork by Ayala Serfaty. The result? A nifty spot to hang out with friends and not too shabby for a date, either.
Chef and owner Gordon Naccarato calls his food “fun dining” rather than fine dining and aims to include a bit of everything.
“The menu is the best one I have ever written,” he said. “It has a lot of share items, lots of vegan and vegetable choices, and just a lot of variety – from cheap street tacos to filet mignon. You can have an inexpensive night out or a spendy celebration all in the same place. The food is modern American, but also playful. Our Hawk Wings with Beast-mode sauce being just one example.”
What put Pacific Grill on the map?
“I think we were an innovator,” Naccarato said. “We were high-end but casual and fun. Unpretentious. I always wanted it to be Tacoma’s living room – where we gather to celebrate occasions whether it is a birthday or just getting together with friends. I love looking around the room and seeing local politicians and friends and also seeing lots of young people learning about good food and wine.”
Pacific Grill serves up lunch, dinner and a happy hour that, hands down, is one of the best in the region with a tasty array of food items at 50 percent off (including the aforementioned Hawk Wings) and drink specials.
The dessert selection is also worth saving room for. Choices include olive oil cake with apricots, cherries and almond gelato and caramel mousse cheesecake … just try to turn that down.
Coming up, watch for four new restaurant projects in the area headed up by Naccarato, who also owns Smoke + Cedar.
